Restore Bus Service for South Bellevue Neighborhoods

The Issue

Due to recent changes implemented by King County Metro at the end of August, entire neighborhoods in South Bellevue, including Woodridge, Norwood Village, and areas East of Richards Road, have been completely cut off from bus services. This sudden change has significantly affected us and others in the community, forcing residents to walk long distances, approximately 20 minutes in the case of my two teenagers, just to reach the nearest bus stops to commute to Bellevue Downtown and Bellevue High School.

The unfortunate reality is that these walks are not only lengthy but also dangerous. Many of these paths lack proper lighting and sidewalks, making them a safety hazard, particularly during the dark winter months. This issue was non-existent when two bus routes, 240 and 246, provided coverage. Bus route 240 used to conveniently pass through SE 26th Street and Richards Road from Eastgate Park&Ride. Sadly, this changed route now uses I-90 to travel west towards Eastgate Park&Ride without serving the communities along the way.

We propose a simple and effective solution: restore bus route 240 through SE 26th Street to service South Bellevue Station from Eastgate Park&Ride. This change would once again provide essential public transport access to the affected neighborhoods and would not disrupt existing coverage.

It's crucial for our community’s well-being that this public transport link is reinstated. Reliable and safe public transit should be a guaranteed service for every member of our community to access educational and economic opportunities seamlessly. Support this petition to urge King County Metro to consider residents’ needs and restore bus coverage to South Bellevue neighborhoods.
