Restore Brighty the Burro to the Grand Canyon North Rim
The Issue
For generations of Grand Canyon visitors, Brighty the Burro was more than just a statue — he was a symbol of curiosity, resilience, and the spirit of the American West.
When wildfire tore through the North Rim’s historic Grand Canyon Lodge in July 2025, the nearly 600-pound bronze sculpture of Brighty was found amid the rubble — charred, damaged, and missing limbs, but still standing. Though partially broken, his presence has sparked a wave of emotion and nostalgia from visitors around the world who remember taking photos beside him, reading the children’s book based on his life, and sharing stories of the real burro who once wandered the canyon trails.
Now, Brighty’s future is uncertain. Park officials are evaluating whether the original statue can be restored or whether a new version will need to be created. But what’s clear is this: Brighty belongs at the Grand Canyon North Rim.
We are calling on the National Park Service and the Grand Canyon National Park leadership to:
- Fully restore the Brighty statue if possible, using expert conservation methods
- Return him to a public-facing location on the North Rim as soon as rebuilding efforts allow
- Ensure Brighty’s story is preserved in educational exhibits, signage, or ranger programs
Brighty is not just a piece of art — he’s a living memory shared by thousands of families. His survival through fire makes him an even more powerful symbol of what endures through loss.
Restoring Brighty isn’t just about a statue — it’s about protecting the cultural heart of a place loved by millions.
