I am deeply concerned about the increasing restrictions on artistic freedom in Trinidad & Tobago. The Government has been systematically muzzling the cultural industry and eroding the independence of this twin island nation. This not only threatens our rich heritage but also stifles the voices of our talented artists, musicians, and creators who enrich our society with their unique perspectives.

Trinidad & Tobago is renowned worldwide for its vibrant cultural landscape, from the pulsating rhythms of calypso to the dynamic artistry of Carnival. These cultural expressions are not just entertainment; they are vital components of our national identity and history. Yet, these voices are being suppressed due to lack of comprehensive legal safeguards for free expression.

Artists are increasingly finding themselves at risk of legal repercussions simply for expressing their views through their craft. This oppressive environment discourages creativity and innovation, which are essential for cultural and economic growth.

In light of this, I urge Parliament to take immediate action to protect artistic freedom by introducing legal measures that guarantee free expression for all artists and cultural practitioners in Trinidad & Tobago. Transparent legislation that prevents political interference in the arts is crucial.

We propose that a special committee be formed to work alongside artists, legal experts, and cultural stakeholders in drafting these regulations. By doing so, we can ensure that the voices that shape our cultural landscape are protected and celebrated rather than silenced.

Our artists deserve an environment where they can create freely without fear of censorship or retribution. It's time to stand up for their right to express themselves and preserve the cultural heritage that defines us.
