The Issue

The Citizens National Bank building near the courthouse in downtown Winchester, Kentucky, once stood as an architectural gem and a symbol of our community's prosperity. This beautiful building deserves restoration. It was once celebrated as the most beautiful building in the state, and we believe it should be returned to its former glory. Restoring this iconic landmark would not only revive its historical charm but also enhance the aesthetic and economic appeal of our town.

The two missing top floors of the Citizens National Bank building carry historical significance for Winchester. Their absence is not just a gap in the skyline, but a loss of a piece of our heritage. To restore these floors is to embrace our past and preserve the cultural legacy for future generations. Such restoration would act as a catalyst for reviving the downtown area, attracting tourists, and fostering a sense of pride among residents.

Since falling out of the hands of the Citizens National Bank, this beautiful building has gone through some rough changes. It stayed mostly intact, until sometime in the 1960’s. It was around this time when they cut some of the original stonework out to put in display windows and make a store front. Then, during the late 1980’s, the top two floors of the building were demolished due to “Structural Damage”. As well as a random window being bricked over next to the distinctive turret (The round part on the corner of the building).

We call upon the local government, heritage conservation experts, and the community of Winchester to come together in supporting this restoration effort. With proper planning, allocation of funds, and collaboration with historic preservation societies, we can restore the Citizens National Bank building to its distinguished status.

It's time to honor our architectural heritage and rejuvenate downtown Winchester. Join us in this effort to bring back the splendor of the Citizens National Bank building by signing this petition. Together, we can make Winchester's downtown a proud reflection of our history and a beacon for the future.
