Restore and redevelop the Peregian Beach Playground

The issue

The Peregian Beach playground has been slowly deteriorating for years, with major sections progressively removed, dismantled, or fenced off without meaningful replacement. What was once a vibrant and well-loved community playground has now been reduced to a fraction of its original size, leaving local children and families with extremely limited play facilities.

For many local families, this playground was once an important community hub where children played, parents connected, and visitors gathered while enjoying the village atmosphere of Peregian Beach. But over time, as the playground has continued to decline, more and more families are leaving the area to visit neighbouring suburbs with safer, cleaner, and more modern playgrounds. Local families should not feel forced to leave their own community just to access quality recreational spaces for their children.

One of the biggest concerns is the continued use of the dusty red bark ground covering throughout the playground. Unlike many modern playgrounds across the Sunshine Coast that now use sand or other cleaner natural alternatives, the bark at Peregian Beach creates excessive airborne dust around young children. Many parents and carers have growing concerns about the potential respiratory and health impacts this may have, particularly for children with asthma, allergies, sensory sensitivities, and other respiratory vulnerabilities.

This issue is especially concerning given Peregian Beach has become one of the Sunshine Coast’s most popular coastal destinations, attracting huge numbers of families, tourists, and visitors every weekend, particularly during the Peregian Beach Markets and holiday periods. The current condition of the playground does not reflect the quality, growth, or reputation of the area and has become a growing source of frustration for local residents and visiting families alike.

Children deserve access to safe, engaging, modern playgrounds that support healthy development, outdoor activity, and community connection. Families deserve public spaces they can feel proud of.

This petition calls on Noosa Shire Council to urgently prioritise the full restoration and redevelopment of the Peregian Beach playground, including:
• Replacement of removed and ageing equipment
• Installation of modern and inclusive play infrastructure
• Removal of the dusty bark surface in favour of safer and cleaner alternatives such as sand
• Proper long-term maintenance and investment into this vital community space

Peregian Beach is a thriving family and tourism destination. Its playground should reflect that.

By signing this petition, you are supporting a safer, healthier, and more vibrant future for local children, families, and the wider community.
