The Issue

As an avid nature lover and regular visitor of the Heritage Rail Trail, I’ve witnessed the beauty and balance this space once held. The flourishing wildlife, quiet privacy, lush greenery, and peaceful moments it provided me and my daughter are among our most cherished memories. The trail was a sanctuary — not just for us, but for walkers, bikers, wildlife, and countless nature lovers.

In early 2025, AEP Ohio (American Electric Power) abruptly clearcut vast stretches of mature trees, shrubs, and natural habitat along the trail, claiming to comply with federal regulations based on their own interpretation. They claim this destruction was required to maintain clearance around transmission lines, yet the trees and habitat were nowhere near the power lines. In fact, representatives from AEP admitted that nothing had drastically changed in terms of vegetation or risk. The clearcutting appears to be a preemptive, extreme measure — not a justified response to an active threat. This was done without warning or community input, despite pushback from Hilliard Parks and Recreation and others who tried to intervene.

AEP has loosely claimed that some areas may eventually be replanted with pollinator plots, but no timeline, guarantees, or full restoration plan has been provided. These small patches of pollinators, while well-intentioned, cannot justify the large-scale destruction of full ecosystems, nor do they replace the shade, biodiversity, or protection the mature trees once offered.

This clearcutting has disrupted the ecological balance, destroyed habitat, and forever altered a beloved public space. But this isn’t just about loss — it’s about accountability, restoration, and protecting what remains.

We, the undersigned, demand the following:

1. Immediate replanting and restoration of native trees and habitat along the Heritage Rail Trail.

2. Sustainable vegetation management practices that prevent future environmental destruction in the name of maintenance.

3. Transparency and community input in all future decisions impacting public green spaces.

This trail is part of our identity. Its destruction should not be our silence. Let this be where we begin to protect what’s left — and restore what’s been lost.

The time to act is now. Sign this petition today to stand with nature, community, and the future of the Heritage Rail Trail. Every signature brings us one step closer to preserving this haven for present and future generations alike.
