Restore and Preserve "The Bridge", A Beloved New York City Landmark
The Issue
My name is Sheila Smalls a Change.org user, this place holds known memories for me and the C.I. community. We represent generations of O'dwyer Gardens Tenants who have made happy memories at what was fondly known as "The Bridge". Once a proud stage accommodating 12 festive Christmas trees, it now remains just a piece of a crooked stair landing This once iconic stage not only housed Yuletide cheer, but also gave a platform to our elected officials for sharing their thoughts and vision. We, the O'dwyer Tenants, have cherished "The Bridge" as a place to come together, a place of shared experiences and stories, and a place that has stood the test of time for over 50 active years. Its popularity even extends to the digital space, with a dedicated Facebook page where followers share their heartfelt experiences.
However, during the renovation following the devastation of Sandy, "The Bridge" was not restored to its original grandeur. This beautiful gazebo-type structure, started as a monument and became a part of our lives, is now a mere shell of its former self. The significance of "The Bridge" extends beyond it being a physical structure - it represents community, unity, and legacy. We believe that it is every New Yorker's right to have access to landmarks that have historical and personal presence in our hearts and lives.
For reasons that go from personal to historical, We demand NYCHA to restore "The Bridge" to its original state. Not just for us, but for the generations to come. Let this be the stage of heritage once again, shared joyously among friends and family. Now is the time for action.
Please sign this petition and join our plea to bring life back into "The Bridge". Stand with us for preservation, community, and legacy in our vibrant city. Every signature brings us a step closer to seeing "The Bridge" resonate with vibrancy once more.
