Restore Accessible Bus Routes to Leicester City Centre

Restore Accessible Bus Routes to Leicester City Centre
The Issue
Without public consultation, buses have been rerouted to end at St. Margarets Bus Station instead of the city centre, where the newly installed Bus Route Signs still stand.
These signs announce "You are at Bus Stop XX - There are NO BUSES from THIS STOP".
People with mobility issues, older people with mobility aids, people with arthritis and those with difficulty getting around now have their buses terminated at St. Margarets Bus Station and face a long walk uphill to get into the city centre, and the same long walk to get back home.
This is proving too much for many people who are now avoiding the city centre, and avoiding social gatherings there which enhanced their lives. In effect it means those with disabilities, mobility issues, difficulties walking uphill are excluded from the City Centre.
These changes have had a detrimental impact on the lives of many local residents. The haphazard reorganisation of the bus routes without prior public consultation has left a significant portion of our community isolated and unable to access essential services, social gatherings, and they are unable to maintain their overall quality of life.
We believe that a city's transport system should be inclusive and accessible to all, irrespective of age or physical condition.
We respectfully request the following:
- That the Labour led council working with the bus companies restore accessible bus routes to the city centre, ensuring that individuals with mobility difficulties can reach their destinations conveniently and without undue hardship.
- 2. That the Labour led council consult the public and that any future changes to the public transport system are made only after thorough consultation with the affected community members.
- That the Labour led council working with the bus companies provide clear and timely information about any alterations to bus routes, schedules or stops so that bus passengers can plan their journeys with confidence.
- Finally, we propose that the infrastructure at St. Margarets Bus Station is enhanced to accommodate passengers with mobility challenges. We believe that these measures will not only improve the well-being of individuals with mobility difficulties but also contribute to a more inclusive and vibrant city centre.
