Restore Academic Integrity @ OU: Reinstate the Instructor& TA, and Protect OU’s Reputation
The Issue
The University of Oklahoma is currently facing national scrutiny due to its handling of the recent Fulnecky essay incident. As students, alumni, faculty, and members of the broader OU community, we are deeply concerned about the growing impact this situation is having on the university’s academic reputation and on the credibility of OU degrees.
The decision to place the professor and teaching assistant on leave before any clear findings were released has created the public perception that OU is willing to compromise academic standards when faced with external pressure. This has led to real consequences: employers and graduate programs have begun questioning the strength of OU degrees, and alumni have reported increased difficulty during job application processes.
This incident does not reflect the values of academic freedom, evidence-based grading, or the high educational standards that OU is known for. Allowing this narrative to continue unaddressed harms every current student, every alumni, and every instructor who relies on OU’s academic reputation.
We are calling on the University of Oklahoma administration to take immediate and transparent action to restore trust in OU’s academic integrity.

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, REQUEST THAT OU:
1. Reinstate the professor and teaching assistant immediately
If no evidence of misconduct has been found, they should be returned to their positions without delay.
2. Publicly reaffirm that academic grading at OU is based on quality, accuracy, and adherence to assignment guidelines
This includes clarifying that religious affiliation or personal beliefs do not override academic standards.
3. Issue a formal statement restoring confidence in OU degrees
The university must address concerns from employers, graduate schools, and alumni by clearly stating that OU maintains rigorous academic expectations.
4. Implement stronger protections for instructors and TAs
Faculty should not face punitive consequences or suspension unless there is verified evidence of wrongdoing.
5. Establish clearer procedures for handling student complaints
Complaint processes must be fair, evidence-based, and designed to prevent the misuse of grievance systems to challenge academically valid grades.
6. Implement a secondary grading review process for disputed or high-impact assignments.
While the professor and TA graded the paper according to the rubric and the standards provided by the department, this situation shows that when an assignment becomes the basis for major disciplinary action or public controversy, a secondary review should be required. Another qualified faculty member or administrator should verify that the grading aligns with the rubric and university expectations before any decisions are made. This protects both students and staff, ensures academic fairness, and prevents instructors from being held responsible for simply following the grading procedures they were trained to use.
———————————————————WHY THIS MATTERS:
OU’s academic reputation affects every student currently enrolled, every alumni seeking employment, and every department striving to maintain high standards. When the university appears to punish educators for enforcing basic academic expectations, it sends a message that OU cannot guarantee academic consistency or integrity.
——————————————————
This directly harms:
•Students whose degrees lose value and are receiving backlash for attending OU.
•Alumni who struggle to find employment as companies are starting to blacklist OU graduates
•Faculty who fear disciplinary action for doing their jobs
•The entire OU community that depends on the university’s credibility
•Restoring trust requires decisive action, transparency, and a clear commitment to academic freedom.
