The Issue

History

For decades, students within the Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUSD) have eagerly awaited the opportunity to participate in the highly impactful 5th grade overnight field trips. These trips allow students to engage deeply with hands-on learning, foster personal growth, and develop lifelong memories by through nature, history, and science, gaining insights that cannot be replicated within the classroom.

Current State

However, any future 5th graders have lost the chance for this pivotal experience due to the district’s elimination of overnight field trips during fifth grade. This decision was made independently without a vote or feedback from educators and parents. The removal of these field trips creates unequal access to enrichment opportunities and widens the gap in access to quality educational experiences available to our students.

The current policy shift also contradicts the district's stated mission to provide equitable and comprehensive education to all students.

Why It Matters

The tradition of overnight field trips provides students with rich, experiential learning. By withholding such a valuable opportunity, we risk depriving our children of unique educational benefits and crucial enrichment experiences. These are critical in helping children develop a love for learning, a sense of independence, and stronger interpersonal skills--and they nurture the holistic development of a child, including social interaction, practical skills, and emotional growth.

What We Can Do

Let's come together to ensure that all students receive the full benefits of an enriched education by calling upon the SBUSD to take swift action and reinstate 5th grade overnight field trips.

Please sign this petition to stand with us in advocating for the reinstatement of this essential educational experience for future generations of students.
