🚋 Restart Tram Routes 24/29 & Reopen Kalighat Depot

More than a year after pipeline work halted tram services on the vital Tollygunge–Ballygunge corridor, Routes 24 / 29 remain suspended despite most of the work being completed. For South Kolkata, this is not a minor disruption but the loss of a dependable, affordable, and clean daily transport option, leading to slower commutes, increased congestion, and rising pollution. The continued closure of the Kalighat tram depot further prevents any meaningful restoration of service, leaving critical public infrastructure idle. This situation is no longer a temporary pause it signals neglect of a system that still holds immense practical value. Trams are not just heritage; they are electric, efficient, and inclusive mobility solutions that cities worldwide are actively investing in. Restarting these routes and reopening the depot offers an immediate, low-cost way to ease traffic, reduce emissions, and improve everyday travel. We urge the Government of West Bengal and concerned authorities to act now: restore services, operationalize the depot, protect the infrastructure, and provide a clear roadmap for revival. This is about people, sustainability, and the future of Kolkata’s transport—bring the trams back.
