Restart or Sell the Western Forest Products Port Alberni Somass Sawmill

The Port Alberni, B.C., Somass Sawmill has been closed for the past 9 months with no word as to if or when it will restart. According to a company statement issued on July 27, 2017 "Western is focused on reducing costs to remain competitive. Cost reductions will be delivered through operational consolidation."
Does this mean they have decided on permanently closing the sawmill?
Employees at the mill have been told that production at the mill is indefinitely curtailed. These employees were laid off for 9 months and then were asked to sever their employment.
Losing a sawmill is a huge blow to employment in the Alberni Valley. We cannot stand idly by while WFP refuses to operate the mill. This shutdown affects many families and all businesses in the region.
Western Forest Products continues to export logs at the same time they say they have no logs for the mill. The fact is they have the logs that are needed, however they have simply chosen not to use them to operate the Somass Sawmill.
We believe that Western Forests Products should either restart production at the Somass Sawmill or sell the sawmill, property and Tree Farm Licence # 44 (TFL # 44) to someone that will. If you agree, please sign the petition.
