RESPONSIBLE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA AMONG STUDENTS
Written by: Joylyn P. Pabrua
We, the undersigned students, educators, parents, and concerned citizens, come together to raise awareness and call for responsible use of social media—especially among the youth.
Social media has become a powerful tool that influences many aspects of our lives. When used properly, it brings countless benefits. It helps entrepreneurs promote their products and support the growth of our economy. It allows students and young people to express their creativity by sharing talents such as dancing, singing, art, and storytelling. It keeps us connected with loved ones, especially family members living abroad, through video calls and instant communication.
However, we also recognize the risks and negative effects that come with excessive or irresponsible use of social media. Many students today stay up late playing online games or scrolling through apps like Facebook and Instagram, which often leads to poor time management, lack of sleep, missed meals, and declining academic performance. Some even forget their responsibilities at home and in school because of too much screen time.
Moreover, there are dangers such as online scams, fake sellers, and misleading information that can harm individuals, especially minors. These risks highlight the urgent need for guidance, education, and accountability.
We believe that social media, when used properly, is a helpful and powerful tool. But it must be balanced with real-life responsibilities, self-control, and awareness.
Therefore, we respectfully petition:
1. Schools to include digital literacy and responsible social media use in the curriculum.
2. Parents and guardians to monitor and guide their children in using social media wisely.
3. Students to reflect on their habits and commit to using social media in a positive and productive way.
4. Government agencies and organizations to launch awareness campaigns and provide support programs that educate the youth about online safety and healthy digital habits.
Together, let us use social media to build, create, connect, and inspire—not to distract, harm, or divide. Let this petition be a call to action: Choose to use social media responsibly.
Let us protect our time, health, and future. is
