Respect C.S. Lewis’ Faith in Netflix's Narnia Adaptation

Respect C.S. Lewis’ Faith in Netflix's Narnia Adaptation
The Issue
The Chronicles of Narnia are more than just stories to me—they’re a gateway to imagination and wonder. When I was just seven years old, I was introduced to these books, and they drew me into a world like no other. I read them so many times that the spine of my treasured copy broke repeatedly and had to be lovingly repaired over and over again. Today, that copy is more a cherished artifact than a functional book, a testament to the countless hours spent exploring Narnia.
As I grew older, my love for Narnia expanded to the screen with the 2005 and 2008 movie adaptations. They became significant to my growth, shaping who I am today. I adore seeing my favorite characters come to life on the big screen. But nothing is more heartbreaking than witnessing adaptations that disregard the integrity of the source material, turning beloved stories into commercial money grabs devoid of the heart and soul that captivated so many fans.
C.S. Lewis infused his faith into the very fabric of Narnia, creating a rich tapestry of Christian storytelling and moral exploration. To strip this classic of its essence in a new adaptation would not only disrespect the legacy of C.S. Lewis but also alienate a passionate fanbase who hold these stories dear. For many, removing the Christian elements from the narrative is akin to ripping the soul from Lewis's creation.
Netflix has an unprecedented opportunity to present a faithful retelling that honors the spirit of ALL the original books while introducing new generations to Narnia's timeless themes of courage, redemption, and hope. Let us appeal to Netflix to embody the true spirit of Lewis' Narnia in this latest adaptation.
Instead they have heeded the exhortations of those who hate any work of storytelling that does not cater to their ‘tolerant’ tastes. They have enlisted Greta Gerwig of The Barbie Movie acclaim as the director for this set of screen adaptations, which wasn’t initially a bad thing. Then there were essays and articles attacking the Christian aspect of the source material and how that should not be put on the big screen (despite the success of a certain crowd-funded live action series and other successful Christian media). And now they have cast a woman, Meryl Streep of The Devil Wears Prada and Mama Mia! fame, as the voice of a Male Lion, Aslan, the Son of the Emperor over the Sea.
Join me in urging Netflix to stay true to the rich characters, narratives, and themes C.S. Lewis wove into The Chronicles of Narnia. The theatrical release of The Magician’s Nephew is Thanksgiving Day 2026. And it will be released to the streaming platform that Christmas Day. The stories we tell the generations after us should be told with the same reverence and purpose Lewis intended. Sign this petition to ensure that this new adaptation becomes a beacon of inspiration that resonates with both loyal fans and new audiences. It’s now or never people! Together, let's honor the legacy of C.S. Lewis and keep the heart and soul of Narnia alive.
