Resignation of Itoco Garcia

Resignation of Itoco Garcia

The Issue

Despite the efforts of many dedicated employees and key stakeholders who worked tirelessly to unify our community´s schools, the Sausalito Marin City School District is once again facing daunting challenges which are directly linked to the failed leadership of our ,.

In three short weeks, our district has owned the Marin IJ headlines. First due to a $1.6 million shortfall that necessitated eliminating 14 staff positions. (Understood to be necessary for the past year or not, this shortfall caught the community and most staff completely off guard, highlighting poor communication by our district's leader.) Then came the news of a teacher walkout at our middle school that left our students with substitutes or fill in para-educators for a full school day (while  was quoted as saying teaching and learning went on like normal). Finally, it was reported last week by MCOE that our district has an additional shortfall of at least $450,000.00 (and growing).

The desegregation order was to unify our community and support our most vulnerable students. However, with the mismanagement of our budget, 54 of our vulnerable students who have been part of our community for years, will have to leave our district. These children do not live in our district, yet most of them have parents who work (many are essential workers) in our community.

In addition, the school bus contract that was negotiated and managed completely by  has been proven to be a colossal disaster. Designed to ensure our most vulnerable K-5 students make it to school each day and can return home after school or following their participation in the after-school program at the Sausalito campus, the service quickly proved to be unreliable in the early fall and has since been unable to deliver on the promises made to Marin City parents and the greater community. Our students are being significantly shortchanged due to this mismanagement.

failed oversight of our district has led to a complete lack of community trust and confidence in him. The mistakes have been too many and the inability to genuinely connect with our school community is ever-present. Long-time district partners are dismayed. Parents are looking at alternative school options. Dedicated school district advocates feel unheard and dismissed for voicing their serious concerns with .

In what world does a leader with this record keep his job? We are calling on to show his respect for our community and resign immediately or for his district board to commence with terminating his contract. There is more than enough cause to remove him from his position at this time. The economic standing and reputation of our district has once again been damaged and we respectfully demand that the Board of Trustees of the SMCSD act swiftly regarding this matter. Please stabilize our district with an interim and help restore some level of confidence in our schools throughout 94965. Our children, families, and hard working staff deserve better. Thank you.
