Oppose Brazos River Authority's Permit 5851

The Issue

We, the undersigned, oppose the Brazos River Authority’s permit 5851 that applies for over 400,000 acre feet of additional water from the Brazos River Basin that can be sold by the Brazos River Authority.

  1. 1) Brazos River Authority’s Water Management Plan is woefully inadequate.  It does not provide long term lake level/river protections for  Lake Granbury,  Possum Kingdom Lake and the Upper Brazos River Basin.
  2. 2) These long term protections would provide for the ecological health of the Upper Brazos River Basin as well as protecting firm water customers such as municipalities that use water from all Brazos River Lakes.
  3. 3) Inflows into Possum Kingdom Lake are the lowest that they have been on record per the Brazos River Authority.  This recent inflow data need to be taken into account into the Water Management Plan.
  4. 4) The Brazos River Authority’s change in lake management protocol in 2007 and again in 2011 has caused and will continue to cause economic and ecological harm to  Lake Granbury, Possum Kingdom Lake and Upper Brazos River Basin.
  5. 5) Despite significant opposition up and down the Brazos basin, the BRA continues to press forward with its efforts to withdraw even more water from Lake Granbury, Possum Kingdom Lake and the Upper Brazos River Basin.
  6. 6) The permit does not identify all the users/industries to whom the BRA will sell the water.  This is a massive change in the way that water is distributed to Texans and gives even more power and control to the Brazos River Authority
