SRVUSD School Board and Superintendent 'Vote of No Confidence' Notification
The Issue
We, the People of San Ramon Valley Unified School District (including parents, caregivers, concerned community residents and tax payers, and supporters of education) hereby declare a "Vote of No Confidence" in both the SRVUSD Board and our current Superintendent, Rick Schmitt.
Time and time again, our District and its 'Management' have failed our students, our dedicated, hard working teachers, and us tax paying, Foundation/Ed Fund supporting parents. Time and time again, we as parents hear about how:
***California has been below the national average in per pupil funding for decades and currently ranks 41st in the nation in per pupil spending on education.
***How SRVUSD is the second lowest funded unified school district in California.
***How SRVUSD is in its 3rd year of declining enrollment. Declining enrollment reduces revenues by about $5 million each year.
***And, how most school districts in California, including SRVUSD, are experiencing structural deficits.
Yet...
***Our SRVUSD Board overwhelmingly approved an obscene raise and salary schedule for our Superintendent, who is currently the 2nd highest compensated in the State (yet, SRVUSD remains a 'lower risk' District when compared to Los Angeles or Oakland, etc.) Additionally, our Superintendent receives additional compensation via the "Me Too" clause in Union contract negotiations, which is unethical at best.
***Management salaries are also very high when compared to similar District sizes among the State
**Continue to ignore the need for SMALLER class sizes, especially in TK-5th Grade AND Special Education-please tell me how our new and struggling learners can actually learn in such an environment-yet, will constantly bemoan that our District enrollment is declining annually??? What this means is with a greater push for unsustainable larger class sizes, more and more classes will be combined into multi-grade instruction and teachers will be laid off! Also, let us NOT forget that just last year a high school student tragically lost their life in a drowning incident due to 58 students in the pool for a PE class with ONE instructor (who was on their cell phone at the time of the incident)-you would think that the settlement just reached by the District would implement change for the disregard for our students learning environment and safety, not to mention our valued and dedicated teaching staff, but no...
Although our Board/SRVUSD 'Management' like to tout that "this year SRVUSD will invest over $300 million in our valued educators and staff who support our students, including over $50 million in pension costs and over $40 million in health and welfare benefits" but what they fail to inform the public is that there is a "Me Too" clause within these contracts so when one union receives increased benefits, others automatically receive the same as well-including, aparently, Management and the Superintendent (according to multiple sources I have spoken with)-to me, this is highly unethical at its best, especially since 85% of the District's operating budget is spent on pay and benefits, with the highest going to Management, NOT our important teachers, nurses, school counselors, resource officers, special educators, librarians, etc.(please see the SRVUSD Salary Schedule for what they are ACTUALLY paid, not the state records of total compensation which includes medical, pension, stipends, etc.)
Finally, it is important to note that although SRVUSD 'Management agreed to an interum agreement in Spring 2019, SRVUSD 'Management has currently NOT fulfilled one part of it. Additionally, the Board and our Superintendent are refusing public comment, discussion, and endorsement of Schools and Communities First.
Management promised to work with SRVEA to provide what's best for our students, and they broke their promise.
After a week of asking for encouragement state funding, they're denying the clear path to funding.
Clearly actions speak louder than words.
Do you believe these people want what's best for our students? I believe the answer is a loud and clear "NO".
