Change the definition of a "farm" in Jefferson Hills Borough ordinances

Change the definition of a "farm" in Jefferson Hills Borough ordinances

The Issue

Hi everyone, as many of you know, I have been fighting on and off with the borough about my chickens. I am not the only resident to have chickens. There are quite a few of us who have them. If there is an "ordinance" against having chickens, then why do so many of us have them?  We have them because there is NO CLEAR ORDINANCE saying we cannot have them. The only thing you will find is the "Definition of a farm" according to Jefferson Hills.  It reads as follows.. "Section 102.2- Farm-A tract of land containing not less than ten(10) acres upon which are maintained, grown and produced for sale or use on the property;domestic livestock, horses, farm grains, feeds, hay, fruits, nursery stock, vegetables, dairy products, poultry, eggs or other crop or produce typical of farm activity in Allegheny County. Kennels for breeding or boarding domestic pets shall be considered farm activity and shall be limited to farm track"  I want to CHANGE this. I believe we SHOULD be allowed to have chickens and grow a vegetable garden if we so choose. The eggs the chickens produce feed our families. We do not sell them. Eggs are ridiculously priced its way cheaper to keep your own chickens and HEALTHIER. There are so many communities around us that allow chickens. So many in fact that the Walmart in West Mifflin has started selling chicken feed and supplies. That should tell you something. Those of us who have chickens have children. Those children have along with us, become attached to our flocks. We love them. They love them. To have to tell them they need to find a new home because certain people in the borough feel we are "farming" when we are not, is absurd. They would be heartbroken. That's not fair to them. So please, help me fight and change the borough into allowing us to have our chickens. ALL chickens, hens and roosters.

Thank you

April Smith
