I am going to begin this update with a clarification. The Eagle Lake City Council meeting minutes for July 6, 2020 state that Mike "asked residents to fund his legal fees through a go-fund me account he has set up". This is false. He shared that we started a GoFundMe account for residents who inquired about helping and could contribute to help with legal fees. This appeal is NOT just about us and residents who have donated found the implication offensive. This is their fight too. It's disappointing to see comments rephrased to misrepresent the resident and it was addressed at the August 3, 2020 meeting (via GotoMeeting) during the pubic comment period.
On July 23rd, a letter I had written to the editor of the Mankato Free Press turned into an article and an interview request from KEYC (the letter was published a day or so later). The developer didn't respond to a request for comment from the Free Press. While we have been interviewed and quoted by the Free Press in a few articles, this was the first time the KEYC story focused on the residential side. Of course, the coverage didn't come without a fresh batch of insults and misinformation from those who claim we're ruining their fun! If only that was the issue (doesn't even crack the top 20). Note: Road America in Elkhart Lake is NOT similar to this proposed project. It's been mentioned a few times as being a great place and huge draw, but this project was never even proposed to be of that magnitude or amenities.
On July 31st our lawyer (Marshall Tanick) visited the area to view the site, talk with residents, check out Eagle Lake (town and body of water), etc.
At the August 3rd city council meeting there was a memo from the city administrator in regards to a "Planning and Zoning Services Proposal". City staff had reached out to South Central Service Cooperative to request a proposal to get an idea on what it would cost to obtain assistance from a consultant with the planning and zoning related to this project. Included in the proposal is a not to exceed amount of $6,500. It was not clear who would be responsible for this cost.
Being misquoted, misrepresented and insulted - we move on. The goal is to ensure due diligence is done to avoid irreversible damage - whether the impact is on wildlife, the quality of life for nearby residents, the increase of noise and traffic, etc. or the future of a shuttered facility that couldn't stay compliant and the effect it could have on the town.
