PROTECT OUR TOWN FROM MONOPOLIZATION

A monopoly is the control of a commodity or service in a particular market, making possible the manipulation of pricing for that commodity or service. When one company is the sole provider of a good or service, it has control over the pricing of that product.

Monopolizing an essential commodity would make it almost impossible for individuals to do without, and in that case the company could name its price.

If only one company can manage a service, there is no incentive for that company to improve its performance or efficiency.

Single source service also promotes poor customer service. There is no need to be helpful or outgoing for a customer, because they have no where else to go.

Loss of product diversity means the products supplied to our local area are unexchangeable, and are subject to the interworking’s of the monopolized supplier.

1.  Do not allow the monopolization of local building supplies

a.      No local competition

b.      Allows for unchecked price setting

c.      Forces local businesses to outsource for materials

d.      Increases building costs for homeowners

2.  A monopolies potential to raise prices indefinitely is its most critical detriment to consumers. Customers will not be able to substitute the good or service with a more affordable alternative.

a.   As the sole supplier, a monopoly can also refuse to serve customers. If a monopoly refuses to sell an important good to a company, it has the potential to shut down that business.
