Rescue the neglected African Grey parrot at Monkey Shack

The Issue

In October 2024, I met an African Grey parrot in a T-shirt and souvenir store called Monkey Shack in Panama City Beach, Florida. Right from the start, I could sense that this parrot was unhappy and not in good health. The store had a track record of mishandling animals; a live monkey that used to be there tragically died. It was evident that the parrot was in a miserable condition, stuck in a cage, with its freedom restricted. I promised myself, and the parrot, that I would do everything in my power to rescue it from its wretched predicament.

After my initial visit, I reached out to Florida Fish and Wildlife in November 2024, hoping they would address the parrot's plight. Unfortunately, I received no response from them, and my attempts seemed to have fallen on deaf ears. When I returned to Florida a year later in October 2025, I made it a point to visit my feathered friend once again. To my dismay, its condition had deteriorated further: it looked even more miserable, visibly sad, and had plucked out more of its feathers, a common stress behavior in parrots.

This African Grey parrot is not just an object to adorn a store but a living being that deserves a nurturing and enriching environment. African Grey parrots are highly intelligent and social creatures, requiring interaction, mental stimulation, and an appropriate diet to thrive. The conditions at Monkey Shack fall drastically short of what is necessary for this parrot's well-being.

Given the store's previous failure in ethical animal care, evidenced by the death of their live monkey, it is imperative that immediate action is taken to rescue this parrot from further harm. I propose that authorities place this parrot in an environment suitable for its needs, such as a sanctuary or with a responsible and experienced caregiver. We must ensure it receives proper veterinary care, nutrition, and the chance to live out its life in a healthy and stimulating setting.

Please join me in urging the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to intervene and rescue this African Grey parrot from its current, unacceptable living conditions. By doing so, we can give this parrot a second chance at a joyful life it truly deserves. Sign this petition to help rescue and rehabilitate this beloved creature, and set a precedent that no animal should endure such neglectful circumstances. Thank you for your compassion and support. Your signature can make a real difference.
