Every time I pass the streets and see a homeless animal who's begging for a scrap, it wrenches my heart. Their fur is matted, eyes desperate, and bodies emaciated. The suffering of these ignored beings is unbearable to witness. I understand that I am not alone in my feelings of deep empathy and heartache for these innocent creatures.

Stray animals are a global concern with the World Health Organization estimating over 200 million stray dogs worldwide. In the United States alone, there are an estimated 70 million stray cats and dogs, with only six to eight million entering the nation's 3,500 shelters each year, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

These numbers are heartbreaking. Immediate action must be taken to provide shelter and care for these animals. We must urge local authorities and other stakeholders to actively participate and invest in large scale rescue missions and establishment of proper animal homes.
