The Issue

In a time when economic uncertainty looms over so many of us here in Greenville, the recent 1% sales tax increase approved by the city council feels like an egregious decision. With over 26% of our population—our friends, neighbors, and family—already struggling beneath the poverty line, this additional financial burden is unacceptable. It will exacerbate food insecurity and make it even harder for residents to meet basic needs.

The decision to raise sales tax to fund the location for a Chick-Fil-A may seem beneficial for business development, yet it overlooks the immediate hardship it places on ordinary citizens. The welfare of our community should be the priority, and more so during such challenging economic conditions. The need for expanding dining options should not overshadow the pressing need to alleviate poverty and provide basic support to those who are most vulnerable.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the current poverty rate in Greenville is 26.05%, a statistic that reflects a very real and present struggle faced by many of our citizens every day. Adding to this burden with an increased sales tax greatly impacts disposable income, making everyday necessities like groceries unaffordable for many.

Moreover, every tax decision should consider the broader impacts on local citizens, especially those least able to absorb additional costs. Instead of prioritizing commercial interests, our focus should be on creating sustainable economic policies that uplift everyone, particularly those in need. There are alternatives to raising taxes, such as reviewing existing budget allocations, seeking federal or state assistance, or encouraging private investments that do not rely on exhausting the resources of those less fortunate.

We urge the Greenville city council to reconsider this decision and explore other revenue avenues that do not disproportionately affect low-income families. It is vital that our leaders recognize the severity of the current economic climate and act with compassion and empathy.

Please join in signing this petition to rescind the 1% sales tax increase and advocate for practical solutions that put the needs of all Greenville residents first. Together, let us ensure that our community remains inclusive, supportive, and fair for everyone. Sign the petition today and make a difference in our town's future.
