The Issue

As a concerned parent in our community, the principal's ongoing decision to allow a registered sex offender (RSO) access to school property for school events deeply troubles me. This decision not only undermines the safety and security that we strive to provide for our children, but it also disregards the collective concerns of us, the parents, who entrust their children to the educational environment.

A registered sex offender's placement on the registry reflects a significant breach of societal norms and trust, indicating that they have committed offenses that deem them a potential risk to our community. Studies have shown that an overwhelming majority of parents, roughly 85% according to recent surveys, believe that schools should be safe havens free from individuals with such a history. Allowing access counteracts this fundamental expectation.

Decisions of this magnitude should not be at the discretion of a single individual, regardless of their position. It is imperative that we reevaluate this decision through a broader, community-focused lens. Input from local law enforcement, child protection professionals, and mental health experts should also be considered to inform school policies that prioritize the welfare of our children.

Our children deserve an educational environment that is not only reflective of academic excellence but also of safety and trust. Schools must remain places where children learn without fear, and parents feel confident in the security measures in place. By rescinding this decision, we reaffirm our commitment to prioritize the well-being of our students and to uphold a standard of vigilance.

To be very clear, this is  permission form for a parent on the RSO list to attend school events their children are involved in, with restrictions placed on them. They do have to have it signed each time. The form is pictured with this petition.

We urge the principal and the school board to reconsider this decision. Join us in signing this petition to protect our children and maintain the integrity and safety of our educational institutions.
