Rescind Iran's vice chairmanship of the commission for social development

Rescind Iran's vice chairmanship of the commission for social development
The Issue
We, in solidarity with those facing injustices, urge the United Nations and its member nations to re-evaluate the decision to appoint Iran as Vice-Chair of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD) for 2027. The mission of CSocD is deeply rooted in the promotion of social justice, equity, and the safeguarding of vulnerable groups. However, Iran's current standing, especially given its ongoing investigation by the UN's Fact-Finding Mission, poses a significant conflict. The Islamic Republic of Iran stands accused of systematically suppressing its citizens, notably targeting women, youth, and minorities. This stark reality casts a shadow on Iran's capability to lead a body that champions social justice. Allowing such leadership not only dilutes the credibility of the Commission but also grievously disrespects the myriad victims of human rights violations. Moreover, the situation is compounded when considering Iran's engagement with the Human Rights Council. The UNHRC, with its foundational principle of universal dialogue, is set to host a high-level address by Iranian officials on February 23, 2026. An address that inherently risks perpetuating misinformation about the domestic human rights landscape in Iran. It's particularly troubling given the Council's recent decision in January 2026 to prolong probes into Iran's alleged "crimes against humanity." Speaking privileges at the UN should not be freely granted to those under scrutiny for such heinous acts. The honorable platform that the UN presents should be preserved for those committed to transparency and cooperation with global investigators. The United Nations has a fundamental responsibility to uphold the principles of its Charter and ensure its respectable forums do not become stages for misleading narratives. In light of these serious concerns, we implore the United Nations to rescind Iran's Vice-Chairmanship and set a precedent for accountability and justice. Let us unite in defending the integrity and purpose of international bodies that were established to protect and uplift the voiceless. Please sign this petition to demand action and uphold the core tenets of social justice and human rights.
