Rescheduling of Final Assessment Test in VIT Chennai's Fall Semester 2023-24

The Issue

The recent Michaung Cyclone that hit Chennai on the 3rd and 4th of December has severely impacted the students of Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai Campus (VIT Chennai). Specifically, day scholars are facing significant challenges due to the widespread power outages that have hindered their ability to study and access essential resources. Some students have even been temporarily displaced from their homes, further exacerbating their study conditions. The rescheduled examination dates, particularly on the 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th of December, have created an undue burden on these students, as they now face the daunting task of preparing for four consecutive exams in as many days.

The current situation poses a serious threat to the academic performance and well-being of the affected students. With the majority of study materials in digital form, the prolonged power outage has left day scholars without access to essential resources, hindering their ability to adequately prepare for the upcoming assessments. The rescheduled exam dates, clustering four exams within a short timeframe, further jeopardize the students' capacity to cover the syllabus thoroughly. If the Final Assessment Test (FAT) proceeds as scheduled, it could lead to unfair evaluations and potentially compromise the academic integrity of the semester.

Immediate action is crucial to address the pressing challenges faced by the affected students. Postponing the Final Assessment Test to a later date, preferably after the college reopens following the Winter break, would allow sufficient time for students to recover from the aftermath of the cyclone, regain access to essential resources, and adequately prepare for their examinations. It is imperative for the authorities at VIT Chennai to consider the exceptional circumstances brought about by the natural disaster and demonstrate flexibility in adapting the academic calendar to the students' needs. This compassionate approach aligns with the institution's commitment to the well-being and academic success of its students. Now, more than ever, is the time to prioritize the welfare of the student body and ensure a fair and equitable assessment process.

While we appreciate the efforts made by the management to reschedule the exam dates to conclude before the 11th and 12th of December, understanding the logistical challenges faced by students who have booked trains or flights to return home, we kindly request the authorities to extend their understanding once more. The recent cyclone has presented unprecedented challenges, particularly for day scholars who continue to grapple with power outages and displacement. By considering a further extension of the exam dates, the management would not only exhibit compassion for those directly affected but also ensure a fair and equal opportunity for all students to excel in their assessments. We sincerely thank the management for their understanding and earnestly appeal for their continued support during these challenging times.
