The Issue

Being a 7th or 8th grader in Mt. Sinai, NY, means balancing schoolwork, friendships, and extracurricular activities. Participating in activities like the Drama Club and spring sports, such as baseball, softball, track, and tennis , is vital for personal growth, social skills, and even future opportunities. However, when these activities overlap, students are forced to make impossible choices between pursuing their love for theater and the excitement of spring sports.

The current Drama Club show date is set to extend into the spring sports season. This scheduling conflict is preventing many of us from experiencing both the lively world of theater and the dynamic fields of sports. Just like us, there are numerous students who look up to participating in multiple activities throughout our middle school years. With each activity providing unique benefits, rescheduling the drama show is crucial to ensure we don't miss out on important experiences and memories.

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association estimates that participation in extracurricular sports enhances student engagement in their academic experience. Similarly, drama has been shown to build confidence and communication skills. A study by the National Association of State Boards of Education found that students engaged in arts have a better GPA, reduced disciplinary infractions, and increased standardized test scores. By rescheduling the Drama Club show, we ensure that more students gain these invaluable benefits.

The proposed solution is simple yet impactful: shift the show dates to avoid overlapping with the spring sports season. A possible date could March 5&6. This change would not only accommodate the interests of those involved in both activities but also encourage higher participation rates in the Drama Club and sports alike.

By signing this petition, you can help us present a united voice to the Mt. Sinai School Administration, highlighting the importance of a balanced and enriched middle school experience. We urge school officials to consider this change for the future success and well-being of their students. Sign today to make a difference for students like us at Mt. Sinai Middle School!
