The Issue

Living near Myrtle Beach, I find myself avoiding the area during specific times due to unfortunate incidents that have cast a shadow over our community. Recently, in the midst of Atlantic Bike Week, Myrtle Beach was in headlines for alarming reasons—ten people were reported shot, some critically injured. This tragic event is not an isolated incident but part of a pattern that emerges during this busy weekend.

Atlantic Bike Week coincides with Memorial Day Weekend, a time meant for families to come together, remember their loved ones, and enjoy relaxing trips to the beach. The current scheduling of Bike Week brings increased crowds and heightened activity that unfortunately leads to a spike in crime rates, creating an atmosphere of fear rather than one of remembrance and enjoyment.

The purpose of this petition is to request moving Atlantic Bike Week to a later date in the summer. By doing so, we can alleviate the congestion and potential danger during Memorial Day, providing families with a peaceful holiday experience. Shifting the event could reduce crime rates by spreading out large gatherings more evenly throughout the months, thus lessening the strain on local law enforcement and emergency services.

Statistically, summers in Myrtle Beach are vibrant, showcasing our stunning coastline and welcoming vibe. Adjusting the schedule would not only preserve these qualities but enhance them by ensuring that both locals and tourists feel safe and at ease.

This decision will require collaboration between community officials, event organizers, and local businesses. We recognize the economic significance of Atlantic Bike Week; hence, rescheduling could additionally open doors to new tourism opportunities later in the season when occupancy rates might otherwise dip.

Join us in our call to action—support a safer, more enjoyable Memorial Day Weekend by signing this petition. Let's work together to retain respect for both our local community and visiting bikers by finding a harmonious solution that prioritizes safety and memory over chaos and fear. Sign now to make a difference.
