The Issue

Growing up in Manitoba, the rhythm of time changes was a routine many of us adapted to — the bittersweet sense of daylight saving shifts twice a year. However, with the Manitoba Government deciding to stay on Central Daylight Time year-round, our children face a new challenge: schools starting their day essentially cloaked in darkness during the peak months of winter. From December through February, kids will leave home in the dimness of dawn, and if they're unlucky enough to have indoor recess or extreme weather, the first natural light might not greet them until dismissal at 3:30 PM.

Adding to this issue, a concerning number of classrooms across the province are deprived of windows. A fellow teacher recently shared with us that in her 8-year teaching span across three different schools, not once did she have the benefit of a classroom window. This absence is not just a structural oversight, but a missed opportunity to harness the abundant benefits of natural light.

Extensive research underscores the importance of natural light for our physiological and psychological well-being. According to a study published by the ‘Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine,’ exposure to natural light helps manage circadian rhythms, boost mood, and enhance concentration. Moreover, a report from the World Green Building Council highlights that students in classrooms with adequate daylit environments achieve 20-25% faster progression in one year in maths and reading.

Yet, the issue is not just about academic performance or convenience. It's about the holistic health of our children and educators. Lack of sunlight can lead to vitamin D deficiencies, potential mood disorders, and a general decline in physical and mental vitality. For teachers, spending entire work days without natural light can similarly affect motivation and exhaustion levels — ultimately impacting the educational environment for students.

Let's call upon the Minister of Education in Manitoba to establish policy mandates requiring every classroom to have at least one window providing direct sunlight. This change is not an arduous make-over but a vital step towards prioritizing our children's health and educational success. Many modern architectural designs offer cost-effective solutions for retrofitting windows in existing structures. Alternatively, portable classrooms could prioritize natural lighting in their design to ameliorate this oversight.

This petition is a plea for a brighter future, literally and metaphorically. It's time we ensure that the leaders of tomorrow bask in the light they deserve, both during the school day and in their futures.
