The Issue

Growing up in Pennsylvania, I've witnessed countless Amish horses laboring tirelessly under the scorching sun, pulling heavy loads day in and day out. What breaks my heart the most is seeing these noble animals suffer from dehydration because there aren't enough places where they can pause and have a much-needed drink of water. Having personally seen too many horses suffer from dehydration, I believe it's time we take action to ensure their well-being.

Amish horses play an integral role in our rural communities. They are more than just a mode of transportation; they are beloved companions and hardworking partners in a timeless way of life. But without access to water, these horses are at serious risk, especially during hot summer months when temperatures soar. According to the National Animal Interest Alliance, even mild dehydration can lead to severe health consequences, including heatstroke and kidney failure.

To address this urgent issue, we propose a policy requiring businesses in Amish-populated regions, like Lancaster County, to provide accessible water troughs for horses. These troughs could be easily installed near parking areas or designated horse tie-up spots and can make a world of difference for the horses' welfare. By implementing such a requirement, we can assure that every horse has a chance to hydrate and avoid suffering the painful effects of dehydration.

This initiative will not only safeguard the health of these working animals but also demonstrate our community's commitment to compassion and responsible animal stewardship. It ensures that as we benefit from the services these horses provide, we equally give them the respect and care they deserve.

Please join me in advocating for this crucial change. Sign this petition today and help us compel local authorities to enact this essential requirement for the sake of Amish horses' health and well-being. Your support can lead to a future where no horse in our community suffers needlessly from thirst.
