The Issue

Living in Washington, I have witnessed the tremendous educational and personal benefits that smartphones provide. Platforms such as YouTube and other online learning tools place an unprecedented wealth of knowledge within our reach. Yet, current restrictions on smartphone use hinder residents from fully accessing these resources, limiting opportunities for growth and advancement.

The evidence is clear: access to smartphones supports both educational development and overall well-being. Research indicates that young people with smartphones are often less prone to depression and anxiety, more socially engaged with peers, and more likely to report a sense of belonging and connectedness. These findings demonstrate that responsible smartphone use can foster healthier, more informed communities.

In our state, however, restrictive policies are unintentionally holding us back. Rather than serving the public good, they are impeding learning, innovation, and social connection. Removing these barriers would empower students, educators, and adults alike to seize the full potential of technology as a tool for education, creativity, and meaningful interaction.

I call upon Washington’s policymakers to reevaluate these restrictions and consider the lasting positive impact of a more open smartphone policy. By doing so, we can promote equity, expand access to information, and strengthen our communities through technology.

This is a pivotal moment. Together, we have the opportunity to create an environment where smartphones are embraced as instruments of progress rather than limitations. I urge you to stand with me in advocating for this change. Sign this petition, and let us work collectively to ensure that every resident of Washington can benefit from the full potential of modern technology.
