The Issue

As a student of the UWM community, I see firsthand how much waste accumulates from single-use plastic plates and silverware every day. On average, students are eating up to three meals a day, and the amount of garbage resulting from this is astronomical.

Imagine the impact we could make if we shifted to using washable and reusable plates and silverware at all food stations on campus. Not only would this reduce the landfill waste, but it would also open up new job opportunities for students, including positions as dishwashers. This initiative not only benefits the environment but also supports the student body by providing employment.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in 2018 alone, 300 million tons of plastic were produced globally, with much of it ending up in the landfill or the ocean. By tackling this issue on our campus, we can strive towards environmental responsibility and reduce these damages.

UWM prides itself in leadership and impact. If this change is made, more campuses may be inspired to create environmentally friendly initiatives.

Please sign this petition to support a greener and more responsible UWM campus environment. Together, we can make a difference.
