Require Voter Identification in USA Elections November 4, 2024
The Issue
Strengthen Voter Identification Measures Ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election
Summary: As an election judge in Ramsey County, Minnesota, I am calling on all U.S. citizens to support enhanced voter identification measures—including government-issued IDs and options like fingerprinting or retinal scanning—to safeguard the integrity of our elections. While Minnesota's current voter ID laws may not significantly impact election outcomes due to its liberal leaning, similar lax laws in swing states could pose serious future issues for election integrity. It's crucial to prioritize the quality of votes over the mere quantity, and to reconsider the accessibility of absentee voting, reserving it for those who truly need it, such as election officials and government employees like myself who are actively participating in the democratic process. Additionally, most companies allow employees time to vote in person, reducing the need for widespread absentee voting.
Petition Text:
Dear Fellow Americans,
As an election judge in Ramsey County, Minnesota, I have had the honor of overseeing the voting process and witnessing firsthand the importance of every single vote. With the next presidential election approaching on November 4, 2024, it is more crucial than ever to ensure our electoral system is secure and trustworthy. In my role, I uphold the highest standards of neutrality—I don't personally care who you vote for; my sole concern is that you exercise your right responsibly and vote once per U.S. election requirements. Our democratic system relies on trust, transparency, and the assurance that each vote cast is legitimate and counted accurately.
The Importance of Quality Over Quantity in Voting:
While high voter turnout is a hallmark of a healthy democracy, it is the quality of each vote that truly upholds the integrity of our electoral system. Ensuring that every ballot is cast by an eligible voter, free from fraud or coercion, is paramount. A large number of votes means little if the legitimacy of those votes is in question. By focusing on the quality of voting—verifying voter identities and preventing fraud—we strengthen the foundation of our democracy.
Reevaluating Absentee Voting:
Absentee voting was originally designed as a means for those who are unable to vote in person on Election Day to participate in the democratic process. However, the widespread availability of absentee ballots may inadvertently open doors to potential misuse and fraud. I believe that absentee voting should be a privilege reserved for those who genuinely need it, such as military personnel overseas, individuals with disabilities, election officials, and government employees like myself who are actively participating in the democratic process.
Moreover, most companies allow employees time off to vote in person, recognizing the importance of civic participation. This accommodation reduces the necessity for widespread absentee voting among the general workforce. By encouraging in-person voting where feasible, we can enhance the security and integrity of the voting process.
By limiting absentee voting to those with legitimate needs, we can reduce the risks associated with ballots being sent to incorrect addresses or intercepted by unauthorized individuals. This measure would further enhance the quality of votes by ensuring that absentee ballots are cast under circumstances that uphold the integrity of the election process.
A Growing Concern for Election Integrity:
In our increasingly digital world, personal information such as names, addresses, and polling locations are alarmingly easy to find online. This accessibility raises serious concerns about the potential for voter impersonation and fraud. The possibility that someone could obtain enough personal information to pose as another voter at their polling location is alarming. Impersonating a voter is a federal offense, punishable by law. However, relying on the chance that impersonators will be caught after the fact is not sufficient. Preventative measures need to be in place to deter such actions from occurring in the first place, thereby ensuring the quality of each vote.
Minnesota's Voter Identification Is Behind the Times:
As of October 2023, Minnesota's voter identification requirements are among the least restrictive in the United States:
Registered Voters: Do not need to present any form of identification at the polling place on Election Day. They simply state their name and address and sign the polling place roster.
Same-Day Registration: Allowed with proof of residence, which can be satisfied through various means, including having a registered voter vouch for you.
In contrast, many other states have implemented stricter voter ID laws that require government-issued photo IDs, enhancing the verification process and prioritizing the quality of each vote.
Political Leanings and Voting Ideologies:
Minnesota's liberal stance has led to less restrictive voting laws, prioritizing accessibility and high voter turnout. While increasing voter participation is valuable, it should not come at the expense of the integrity and quality of the votes cast. In swing states, where elections are often decided by slim margins, the absence of strict voter identification measures could pose serious future issues for election integrity.
Implications for an Unfair Election Process:
Vulnerabilities in Security: Lack of strict voter ID requirements and broad access to absentee voting create potential vulnerabilities, compromising the fairness and quality of elections.
Disparities Among States: Differences in voter ID laws and absentee voting policies lead to inconsistencies in electoral security nationwide.
Erosion of Public Trust: Without robust voter ID laws and controlled absentee voting, public confidence in the electoral process may diminish.
Preventing Voter Impersonation with Enhanced Identification:
Implementing Government-Issued IDs and Biometric Verification: Requiring government-issued IDs and offering options like fingerprinting or retinal scanning add robust layers of security to verify each voter's identity, ensuring that every vote is authentic.
Updating Voter ID Requirements and Absentee Voting Policies: Aligning with states that have stronger safeguards reduces the risk of voter impersonation and misuse of absentee ballots, enhancing the overall quality of votes.
Addressing Legal Defensibility: Strengthening identification measures and refining absentee voting eligibility reduce reliance on post-election legal actions, which may not effectively rectify fraudulent activities.
Our Proposal:
We advocate for the introduction of mandatory voter identification requirements nationwide, utilizing government-issued photo IDs and offering biometric verification options to verify each voter's identity at the polls. Additionally, we propose that absentee voting be reserved for those with legitimate needs, such as military personnel, individuals with disabilities, election officials, and government employees like myself who are actively participating in the democratic process. Recognizing that most employers allow time off to vote in person, we encourage voters to utilize this opportunity to participate directly in the democratic process. This approach prioritizes the quality of each vote, ensuring that every ballot cast contributes to a fair and accurate election outcome.
Addressing Accessibility and Privacy Concerns:
Government-Subsidized IDs and Biometric Services: Provide government-issued IDs and biometric services at no cost and/or with subsidized funding for those unable to afford them or unable to apply in person, eliminating financial and logistical barriers.
Strict Data Protection Measures: Ensure that any biometric data collected is securely stored and used solely for voter verification, safeguarding personal privacy.
Comprehensive Outreach Programs: Assist individuals who may face challenges in obtaining identification or have concerns about biometric methods.
Streamlined Processes: Simplify procedures for obtaining IDs and participating in biometric verification to ensure efficiency and ease for all citizens.
A Call to Action:
With the presidential election on November 4, 2024, fast approaching, it's imperative to address potential vulnerabilities in our electoral system. While Minnesota's liberal leaning means current lax voter ID laws and broad absentee voting access may not significantly affect election outcomes here, similar issues in swing states could have profound implications for the integrity of national elections. By prioritizing the quality of voting—ensuring that each vote is legitimate and accurately counted—we can strengthen the very foundation of our democracy.
We urge all U.S. citizens to join us in advocating for stronger voter identification laws and a more controlled approach to absentee voting to protect the integrity of our elections across all states. By enhancing our identification measures and refining absentee voting eligibility—including government-issued IDs and options for biometric verification—we can address vulnerabilities posed by the easy accessibility of personal information and the limitations of current verification methods.
Let us come together to safeguard our democracy for current and future generations.
