The Issue
Our hardworking community at the USPS Wichita, KS Processing and Distribution Center has been struggling for over three years due to a failing HVAC system and deteriorating plumbing. The systems, critical for ensuring a safe and healthy work environment, have been long overdue for repairs, impacting not only our comfort but our health and well-being.
On the south side of our plant, the plumbing is severely outdated, creating potential hazards and hygiene concerns. Meanwhile, our faltering HVAC system is unable to maintain a reasonable indoor temperature, especially during extreme weather conditions, further strain our employees' ability to perform their duties efficiently and safely.
The importance of a healthy workplace cannot be overstated. Poor indoor conditions can lead to decreased productivity, higher sick leave rates, and even long-term health concerns, such as respiratory issues and heat-related illnesses. Employees deserve to work in a setting that does not compromise their well-being.
We emphasize that these issues aren't just minor discomforts but significant health and safety risks. USPS employees have tirelessly continued their essential work, especially highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring that mail and packages are delivered timely to homes across the nation. Providing them with a safe working environment is the least that can be done as recognition of their unwavering service.
