The Issue

I am a student at the University of Florida, and I am tired of being misrepresented by online exam scores. These scores often fail to accurately reflect my performance as a student, while online exam proctoring allows for cheating and creates disparities in education. As students, we are striving to demonstrate our capabilities, knowledge, and dedication in all our courses, but the current system hinders our ability to showcase our true potential.

The reliance on online proctoring has led to several concerns over integrity and fairness. Studies have shown that online exams can inadvertently facilitate dishonest behaviors due to the difficulty in monitoring remote environments effectively. Furthermore, not all students have equal access to the necessary technology or a quiet, distraction-free space that is conducive to taking exams. This inequity results in some students being unfairly disadvantaged.

In-person proctored exams provide a more level playing field, as they ensure all students are subject to the same conditions, minimizing the risk of cheating. Additionally, they offer a more precise assessment of a student's understanding and preparation. Students who learn better through traditional methods benefit from in-person evaluations, which can include face-to-face interactions with educators and peers.

The University of Florida should prioritize offering in-person proctored exams as an option for all students, regardless of the course's difficulty or delivery method. By doing so, the university would demonstrate its commitment to academic integrity, fairness, and student success.

This initiative is not only important for current students but also for the reputation of the university as an institution that values equal opportunity and the authentic representation of student achievements. Implementing in-person exams as an option would align the University of Florida with other leading institutions that offer students a choice in their mode of assessment.

To uphold the standards of education and ensure a fair evaluation process, we call on the University of Florida to make in-person proctored exams available for all courses. Join me in signing this petition to advocate for a fair and inclusive assessment system for all students.
