In our increasingly digital world, data centers play a crucial role in providing the necessary infrastructure to support our internet-based lifestyle. Yet, there is a growing concern regarding the lack of transparency and community involvement in the planning and development of these massive facilities. This issue is particularly close to my heart because I live in a neighborhood that narrowly escaped becoming the site of a proposed data center without our community’s consent or knowledge.

Across our county, drawn-out battles have erupted over proposed data centers. These facilities can alter landscapes, increase local traffic, and significantly impact residential living conditions. Yet, plans for their development often proceed with minimal input from the residents most affected by their presence. Unilateral decisions in these matters are unacceptable.

Data centers can have far-reaching impacts, from environmental concerns due to massive water and energy consumption to potential effects on property values. A study by the University of California reveals that data centers can consume as much electricity as small towns and require upwards of 360,000 gallons of water per day for cooling. It's imperative that such decisions are made with full transparency and taken into account the voices of local communities.

Our proposal is straightforward: require all data center siting and development plans to be made publicly available, plain and easy to understand, long before final decisions are made. Furthermore, mandate a binding community vote before any data center project can proceed. Engaging the community not only fosters trust and cooperation but ensures that development aligns with the needs and preferences of the people who will be most impacted.

Several counties have demonstrated successful models of public engagement and transparent planning processes. The approach taken by Loudoun County, Virginia, where community members are deeply involved in decision-making processes, should inspire us all. If implemented, such transparency and democratic involvement could lead to smarter, more resilient choices for our communities.

We welcome technology and acknowledge the importance of data centers. However, their placement and development must be handled responsibly and equitably. Let's ensure that our communities are empowered to shape their present and future environments.
