Every time I pull over to the shoulder of a busy Michigan highway to assist a stranded motorist, I feel a chill of fear. As a tow truck operator, my biggest concern is the glaring possibility of not being noticed by other drivers, especially under poor weather conditions or at night. Currently, Michigan law only requires that tow trucks have amber strobe lights, which unfortunately do not always stand out amidst the myriad of lights on the road. The addition of red strobe lights could be that crucial element that keeps me—and countless others in my profession—safe.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a significant number of roadside injuries and fatalities occur each year. These incidents often involve tow truck operators, who navigate the hazardous environment of busy highways to offer help. Red strobe lights, as opposed to amber, have been proven to be more attention-grabbing, potentially reducing the risk of accidents.

States like Ohio and Pennsylvania have already adopted legislation that allows for more pronounced lighting on tow vehicles, helping to reduce the number of accidents involving roadside service vehicles. They recognized the need for increased visibility for these essential workers who risk their lives every day.

We are calling on the Michigan State Legislature to amend current laws and require all tow trucks to be equipped with red strobe lights, in addition to the amber lights already mandated.
