Require thorough investigations of hanging deaths
The Issue
Juliana Umba Nzita, a vibrant 16-year-old girl, was recently found hanging near a church in Charlotte. Her death, like so many others, was quickly categorized as a suicide without a comprehensive investigation. This marks the second instance within a month where a person of color in the Charlotte area has been dismissed as a suicide. Sadly, this trend is not confined to just one area. Across the nation, particularly following the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, there have been numerous cases where the deaths of Black individuals by hanging are rapidly written off as suicides, raising countless questions and concerns.
Statistics reveal that people of color consistently face biases and injustices in various aspects of life, including death investigations. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, out of the racial hate crime offenses reported, 63% targeted Black Americans. Given this backdrop, it is critical to ensure that all deaths, especially those that appear suspicious, receive the full investigative effort they deserve, irrespective of race.
The reluctance or haste to classify these deaths as suicide without diligent inquiries is alarming. Such mischaracterizations not only rob the victims of justice but also their families of closure. The integrity of law enforcement is at stake when investigative standards are not consistently applied.
To rectify this issue, we are calling upon law enforcement agencies, across all states and municipalities, including coroners, to conduct thorough and transparent investigations into all hanging deaths. This includes proper forensics, interviews with family and witnesses, and consideration of any potential bias or foul play.
Furthermore, establishing a federal oversight committee to review and guide local investigations into such deaths could provide much-needed assurance. Victims and their families require accountability, and the public deserves to trust in the conscientiousness of their protectors.
