The Issue
My name is William Roberts, and I am a pensioner who retired in 2010. I worked diligently until I was 77 years old, well past the conventional retirement age of 65. Much to my dismay, I discovered that despite decades of hard work, I receive significantly less in state pension compared to my peers who retired after 2016. This inequity persists solely because of when we retired, not due to any differences in our contributions or needs.
The UK's old age pension system operates on a two-tier basis, an outdated framework that unfairly discriminates against those who retired before 2016. Despite the government's promise that these discrepancies would "level up" over time, the gulf has only widened, leaving many older pensioners struggling to make ends meet. The discrepancy can be as much as £50 per week, a substantial amount for those on a fixed income, and this difference only grows larger each year.
Living costs do not respect retirement dates – they impact all of us equally. With rising costs in essentials such as food, utilities, and healthcare, older pensioners face financial strains that are unjust and unnecessary. It's a fundamental misconception to assume that just because someone is older, their cost of living is less demanding. In truth, as we age, our needs often increase; whether it is due to health-related expenses or the necessity of assistance at home.
The time has come for the government to implement a fair pension system that reflects the actual cost of living for all citizens, regardless of their retirement date. By equitably adjusting the state pension, we can ensure dignity and financial security for all UK pensioners. This change is not only about righting an injustice but also about acknowledging the lifelong contributions that all pensioners have made to our society.
