The Issue

On April 17, 2021, my son, Kielyn Toone, attended an event at The Annex, also known as The Evansville Community Development. That night, there was no security present at the venue. Inside the building, a fight broke out, escalating outside where gunshots were fired. Tragically, my son was struck by a stray bullet. As an innocent bystander, he lost his life due to the injuries he sustained that night.

The loss of my son has been devastating, not only for our family but for our entire community. The Annex has become synonymous with violence and chaos, serving as a hub for dangerous activities instead of a safe community resource it's meant to be. Since its inception, it has been plaguing our community with incessant problems, compromising the safety and well-being of our families.

The lack of security measures and poor management at The Annex highlight a blatant disregard for community welfare and safety. We cannot allow such a venue to operate unchecked in our neighborhood. The presence of an unsafe establishment like The Annex is unacceptable and endangers the lives of Evansville residents continually.

To prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of our community, we must advocate for the immediate closure of The Annex. By closing this venue, we can take a definitive stand against violence and work towards a safer environment for everyone in Evansville.

This petition calls upon local authorities and community leaders to recognize the dangers posed by The Annex and take immediate action in closing it down. We need venues that promote community growth and provide a safe space for our families and children, not places of peril and unrest.

Please join me in bringing this critical issue to the forefront and ensuring change happens. Sign this petition to demand the closure of The Annex in Evansville, paving the way for a safer future for our community. Your support can help prevent further tragedies like the one that claimed Kielyn’s life.
