The Issue

Living in Russell, Kansas should be more predictable, but it’s a constant worry for me and many others. My family home, situated at a crucial juncture where the northern and western waterways meet, is constantly threatened by floods. On numerous occasions, heavy rains have led the water to rise beyond its limits, flooding the streets nearby and encroaching upon the sanctity of our yard. This isn't just a simple nuisance; it disrupts lives, damages property, and poses a constant threat to our safety.

Russell has a waterway system designed to direct excess water safely; however, the upkeep has been less than adequate, resulting in significant risks whenever a storm hits. Many residents, including myself, find that every forecast of rain brings with it anxiety and fear. The standing water not only poses an immediate risk of flooding but also contributes to long-term infrastructural damage and potential public health concerns. Stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for insects, which can lead to an increase in insect-borne diseases.

We need the city officials of Russell to take proactive measures by trenching out the waterways. This measurable step would enhance the capacity of our waterways, allowing them to carry excess water more effectively and reduce the risk of flood damage to homes and public areas. By implementing regular maintenance schedules and ensuring the waterways are free from debris and obstruction, we can safeguard our properties and community.

Furthermore, investing in this crucial infrastructure project will strengthen Russell’s resilience to extreme weather events. This will ensure our town can adapt and thrive in the face of increasingly unpredictable weather patterns. Inaction is not an option when our homes and health are at stake. We are calling on the city council and local government agencies to allocate necessary resources and prioritize this important project.

Please join me in urging the city of Russell, Kansas to prioritize public safety by trenching out the waterways. Every signature will amplify our call for action and put pressure on decision-makers to protect our homes and futures. Sign this petition to be a part of a meaningful change for our community.
