The Issue

During many beach cleanups, I've witnessed firsthand the alarming amount of single-use plastic beverage bottles and their caps littering our beautiful shores. While picking up these bottles is a challenge in itself, it's the bottle caps that present an even tougher problem. These small caps tend to get buried under the sand, making them difficult to retrieve. Over time, they often end up in the ocean, posing a significant threat to marine life.

The impact of plastic pollution on our marine environments is well-documented. According to the Ocean Conservancy, plastic bottle caps are one of the top five most common items found during beach cleanups worldwide. These caps might be small, but the damage they inflict is immense. Birds and marine animals often mistake them for food, leading to ingestion that can cause internal injury and often death. Moreover, the breakdown of plastics releases harmful chemicals into the water, further endangering aquatic life.

Florida, with its extensive coastline and vibrant marine ecosystems, is particularly vulnerable. A proactive measure is urgently needed to address this growing environmental threat. By mandating that all single-use plastic beverage bottles under 3 liters in Florida come equipped with tethered bottle caps, we can significantly reduce the number of loose caps that contribute to this widespread pollution.

Implementing this change would not only help in conserving our precious marine environments but would also align Florida with sustainable practices being adopted globally. The European Union, for instance, has already recognized the benefits of tethered caps, mandating their use in an effort to reduce plastic litter.

The solution is simple yet effective. It requires collaboration from beverage manufacturers and legislative bodies to adopt this small, yet impactful change in product design. Our oceans and beaches belong to all of us, and it is our collective responsibility to protect them.

Join me in urging Florida's lawmakers to mandate tethered caps for all single-use plastic bottles under 3 liters. Let's lead by example and demonstrate our commitment to preserving our stunning coastlines and marine life. Please sign this petition to support the adoption of tethered bottle caps in Florida, and take a step towards a cleaner, safer environment for all.
