The Issue

I've had several frightening experiences as a pedestrian in both London and Kent. Too often, drivers approaching pedestrian crossings fail to slow down, resulting in numerous near misses for myself and others. This danger is compounded by the lack of awareness or understanding of local driving rules among international drivers. Many of them either don’t stop or are forced to make emergency stops at these critical points, putting lives at risk.

While the idea of international travel and cross-border mobility is embraced globally, the safety of everyone on our roads must remain a priority. Despite holding an international driving licence, numerous drivers lack familiarity with the UK's specific road rules and regulations. This absence of local knowledge often translates into risky behaviors, especially at pedestrian crossings.

To bridge this gap, we must require individuals with international driving licences to undertake a mandatory driving test before they are allowed to drive on UK roads. This test will ensure they are fully aware of local traffic laws, including the importance of yielding at pedestrian crossings. Such a move will not only enhance road safety but also increase public confidence in sharing roads with international drivers.

Furthermore, introducing cameras at pedestrian crossings across London and Kent would serve as an effective deterrent against reckless driving. These cameras would help to identify and penalize those who violate traffic rules, ultimately reducing the number of dangerous incidents associated with international drivers.

Statistics reveal that pedestrian safety is a significant concern in urban areas. According to the Department for Transport, pedestrian casualties made up 24% of total road deaths in the UK in 2020. Addressing this issue is not optional but a necessity to protect lives.

By implementing these measures, we can create a safer environment for pedestrians and drivers alike. We urge the UK government to take immediate action to mandate driving tests for international licence holders and to install cameras at critical pedestrian crossing points.

Please sign this petition to help bring about these crucial changes and safeguard the lives of pedestrians across the UK.
