Require Tax Deductions for Bereaved Parents of Stillborns

Require Tax Deductions for Bereaved Parents of Stillborns
The Issue
Leaving the hospital without your baby due to a stillbirth, and then getting billed three weeks later, feels like rubbing salt in the wound. Bereaved parents need more support than ever, especially when they don't get to bring their bundle of joy home. The grief of losing your unborn child, experiencing the delivery of a stillborn, dealing with funeral arrangements, and facing time off work and rising medical bills all add up to an immense emotional and financial burden.
While several states do offer tax credits or deductions for bereaved parents, the amounts are inconsistent and can change at any moment. This lack of uniformity and stability in the financial support system leaves many families vulnerable in their darkest moments. In 2020 alone, an estimated 1 in 160 pregnancies ended in stillbirth in the United States, impacting thousands of families each year.
To make a measurable difference, we must require all states to provide a standardized tax deduction or a child tax credit specifically for parents who endure the tragedy of a stillbirth. This financial relief will not only help cover the costs associated with loss and grief but also acknowledge the unique challenges these families face.
Every parent deserves recognition and support from the community when tragedy strikes—support that can help alleviate some of their financial strain. We urge lawmakers and state governments to enact policies that offer consistent and meaningful financial assistance to parents who experience a stillbirth. Join us in advocating for this change to bring solace and stability to grieving families.
Please support bereaved parents by signing this petition.
