The Issue

I have been the subject of cyberbullying and harassment, and I understand the profound harm it can cause to its victims, especially children. Every day, countless individuals experience the same torment online, and what hurts more is the apparent inaction from social media companies who fail to follow through with their own Community Guidelines.

Social media platforms have exploded in the past decade, becoming central to our communication and interaction. But with this growth comes the responsibility to protect users from harmful behavior. Despite having Community Guidelines that promise to prevent cyberbullying and harassment, many companies fall short in enforcing these rules. This negligence allows harmful content to propagate unchecked, leading to real-world emotional and psychological damage for victims.

Data shows that approximately 59% of teens in the United States have been bullied or harassed online. This shocking statistic is a call to action; we cannot stand by while our youth and vulnerable populations are targeted with ruthless attacks. Cyberbullying is not just a virtual issue - its effects are real, and they are destructive.

We demand that lawmakers step in to require these social media giants to comply strictly with their own Community Guidelines. Legislation is needed to hold these companies accountable for their roles, whether direct or indirect, in enabling a culture of cyberbullying and harassment. Such laws would not only provide a clearer legal pathway for victims to seek justice but would compel social media companies to take preventative actions, thus creating safer online environments.

Join me in urging our legislative bodies to take this necessary step for accountability and protection. By signing this petition, you are standing up for the countless individuals who face online harassment daily and ensuring a safer, more respectful online community for future generations. Let us send a clear message: social media companies must do better. Please sign and share this petition to make a profound change.
