Require Sensory Friendly Areas in New Hampshire Hospitals

Require Sensory Friendly Areas in New Hampshire Hospitals
The Issue
My son, Emmett, is autistic and becomes overstimulated in emergency departments while seeking medical care. This is not just our struggle. Families across New Hampshire face similar challenges when visiting hospitals for urgent care. The bright lights, constant noise, and overwhelming hustle in hospital waiting areas can be a sensory nightmare for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). These environments can lead to increased anxiety, meltdowns, and an overall traumatic experience for those with sensory sensitivities.
In New Hampshire, hospitals serve as crucial healthcare providers for countless families. We trust these institutions to deliver compassionate and accommodating care. However, many currently lack the facilities to cater to the needs of patients with ASD. This is not merely an issue of comfort, but one of necessity and fairness. According to the CDC, approximately 1 in 54 children in the US is diagnosed with ASD. These children, and their families, deserve environments where they can safely receive medical attention without distress.
We propose that all general hospitals in New Hampshire be required to establish designated sensory-friendly waiting areas. These spaces would offer a quieter, calmer alternative for individuals with ASD, free from the often overwhelming sensory input of standard waiting rooms. They could feature softer lighting, soundproofing, and comfortable seating to create a more peaceful atmosphere.
By implementing sensory-friendly areas, we would not only be meeting a critical healthcare need but also showing our commitment to inclusivity and empathy. These designated zones are a manageable update that would significantly improve the hospital experience for autistic individuals and their families.
We urge healthcare authorities and hospital administrations across New Hampshire to take immediate action. Please support this petition and help us create a more accessible and humane healthcare environment for everyone. Sign now to make sensory-friendly waiting areas a reality in our state's hospitals.
