Require schools to allow excused absences for menstrual pain

Require schools to allow excused absences for menstrual pain
The Issue
Every month, I endure intense menstrual pain that often leaves me unable to attend school. Unfortunately, this has resulted in numerous unexcused absences, as the school does not recognize menstrual pain as a valid reason for missing a class. This situation is not only unfair to me but to countless students who experience similar challenges.
Menstrual pain is a legitimate medical condition that affects nearly 80% of people who menstruate, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to debilitating pain that can prevent individuals from performing daily activities. The lack of recognition for menstrual pain as a valid reason for an excused absence only adds to the stigma and misunderstanding surrounding menstruation.
We need to change this. Schools should adopt policies that recognize menstrual pain as a legitimate medical reason for excused absences. Such policies would not only support students like me but also foster a more inclusive and understanding school environment. They would encourage individuals experiencing severe menstrual pain to take necessary rest without the fear of academic penalty.
Many states recognize similar physical ailments and grant excused absences for them. Menstrual pain deserves the same consideration to avoid penalizing students for a natural and unavoidable biological process. This change would promote gender equality and validate the experiences of those who menstruate.
Join me in urging school boards and educational bodies to implement policies for excusing absences due to menstrual pain. Sign the petition and help create a supportive environment for all students.
