Require Santa Monica High School to reinstate girls frosh/soph soccer
The Issue
My sister is an incredibly passionate soccer player who has dedicated countless hours to training and improving her skills. Growing up in Santa Monica, CA, she, along with many other talented young girls, has dreamt of playing soccer at the high school level. However, this dream is being jeopardized by the recent discontinuation of the Girls Frosh/Soph soccer teams at Santa Monica High School.
It is deeply disheartening to witness the inequity in sports opportunities within our community. While the boys have both Frosh/Soph and JV teams, the girls are left without the same chance to compete, develop their talents, and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with being part of a team. The popularity and success of girls' soccer in Santa Monica are evident, with many girls excelling in club leagues and athletic programs outside of the school. Yet, these determined athletes are being denied the platform to showcase their abilities and foster school spirit. AND forced to pay high club fees if they want to continue to play.
Reinstating the Girls Frosh/Soph soccer teams is not just about playing a sport; it's about promoting gender equality, empowering young women, and encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle. When girls are given equal opportunities to participate in athletics, it nurtures their confidence and helps them build invaluable life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and dedication.
We urge the school administration to reconsider their decision and recognize the importance of providing equal athletic opportunities for all students. By reinstating the Girls Frosh/Soph teams, Santa Monica High School can demonstrate a commitment to gender equity and inspire a new generation of female soccer players.
Please sign this petition to ensure that girls in our community have the chance to pursue their passions and dreams on an equal playing field. Together, we can make a difference and advocate for fairness in sports at Santa Monica High School.
