Require Ridgefield schools to reconsider the elementary schedule changes

The Issue

When we ask our children about their favorite part of the school day, the answer is almost unanimous: recess, PE, art, and music. These are not just moments of leisure; they are integral to our students' learning, enjoyment, and overall educational experience. As a parent in the Ridgefield School District, I am deeply concerned about the proposed changes to the elementary school schedule that could significantly reduce time for these essential activities.

Our district is on the verge of implementing changes that would cut valuable time from recess, lunch, and special classes, including art, music, and physical education. Because of days off in the school calendar there are some weeks where these subjects will not be offered at all.

Under the new 2026/27 elementary schedule students will lose at least 25 minutes of recess per week,  lose 15 minutes of art per week, and see PE and music cut from around 78 classes per year to roughly 34 classes.  Due to a rotating schedule, some weeks will see no classes in music, PE or art.  These changes threaten to limit the opportunities for students to move, socialize, and engage in creative expression, aspects that are critical for their development and well-being.

Research consistently shows that physical activity and creative outlets enhance learning, improve focus, and reduce behavioral issues. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recess provides children cognitive, social, emotional, and physical benefits. Furthermore, studies highlight how music and art education foster creativity and critical thinking, skills that are invaluable both in and out of school.

We acknowledge that academic instruction is vital, but we must also recognize the incredible influence and importance of providing holistic education. We cannot ignore the fact that the vast majority of elementary students look forward to these times for a reason. They are not just reprieves but vital spaces where children grow, learn, and thrive.

It is imperative that the Ridgefield School District board does not rush into implementing these changes without thorough consideration and community input. A decision of this magnitude impacts our children, our families, and the future of our community. We are calling for transparency and a democratic process by requiring that these proposed schedule changes be brought to a vote.

By signing this petition, you're advocating for a holistic educational experience that honors and values every aspect of a child's growth and learning. Join us in urging the Ridgefield School District to consider the voices of students, parents, and educators before making such impactful decisions. Let us preserve the educational experiences that our children cherish and that foster their development in countless positive ways. Please sign our petition and make a difference in the lives of our children.
