Require Retailers in Philadelphia to Cover Bagging Costs

Require Retailers in Philadelphia to Cover Bagging Costs
The Issue
Shopping can be a stressful experience, especially when I have to bag my own groceries while the cashier stands idly by. I chose to shop at certain grocery stores to support my community, but I'm often met with an additional burden—having to pay for bags and doing the cashier's job without any assistance. I am not their employee, yet I find myself rushing to bag my items as the line grows impatient behind me. It's unfair, and I deserve better from stores that benefit from my business.
In Philadelphia, we need a change. Retailers should absorb the cost of bags, an expense that is a mere fraction of their earnings, instead of transferring this cost to the customer. Cashiers should also assist with bagging, ensuring a seamless and efficient shopping experience. Why are customers doing the jobs that store employees are paid to do? We deserve a discount if we are forced to do the cashier's job.
Retail giants can spare the few cents per transaction required to provide free bags and bagging services while maintaining their focus on customer satisfaction. The gross revenue of large supermarkets already allows them extensive leverage; transferring such a minor cost onto customers is both unnecessary and disrespectful.
According to Statista, in 2022, the U.S. retail industry was projected to hit $5.94 trillion in sales. That's trillions in profits. Forcing customers to pay for bags while taking on employees' tasks seems unreasonable given their soaring profits. Cashiers are employed to assist, not observe. By reforming these practices, stores can enhance their service, which could significantly boost customer satisfaction and loyalty.
Philadelphians, it's time to demand accountability and fair treatment in the check-out aisles. By requiring retailers to take on the cost of bags and to ensure cashiers bag items, we can create a more equitable shopping experience for everyone involved.
